Protect Your tooth With Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment or endodontic therapy is removing infected pulp of tooth, cleaning and filling with gutta-percha (natural latex) and eugenol based cement. A resin called Epoxy is used to bind the natural latex in some root canal procedures. This procedure generally saves the tooth from complete extraction.

Why is pulp to be removed?
When the pulp or nerve tissue is damaged, the bacteria start invading the entire pulp chamber resulting in abscessed (pus) tooth. In addition to the abscess, patients might have severe swelling on the face, head, and neck. Bone loss will occur around the root tip.
How is the root canal treatment done?
An endodontist gives the patient local anesthesia for numbing. Then he makes an opening through the tooth crown into the affected pulp. A tooth file is used to clean the pulp and affected nerve of the canal. Then the dentist shapes the canal with filling material. Tooth irrigator is used to clean the canals and remove debris.
Then the canals are filled with permanent materials say gutta-percha, which keeps the tooth out of infection. A temporary filling is placed on the top of gutta-percha to seal the opening. The temporary filling remains in the place until it is covered by a crown or cap that looks like a natural tooth. Finally, the crown is cemented into the place. After the root canal treatment, patients are prescribed with painkillers and antibiotic to suppress the pain and prevent infection.
